The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences (DCEO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) at the SIU headquarters in Pretoria, marking a significant milestone in strengthening cooperation in the fight against corruption and economic crimes.
The high-level signing ceremony was attended by the heads of both institutions, senior officials, and invited stakeholders, underscoring the shared commitment to enhanced collaboration, integrity, and accountability in public and private sectors.
The MOU establishes a formal framework for cooperation between the DCEO and the SIU, aimed at improving the prevention, detection, investigation, and prosecution of corruption and economic offences. Key areas of collaboration include information and intelligence sharing, joint investigations where appropriate, capacity building, technical assistance, and the exchange of best practices.
Speaking at the event, the Director General (DG) of the DCEO Adv.Brig. Gen.Mantso Sello emphasized that the agreement reflects a proactive approach to addressing increasingly complex and cross-cutting corruption and financial crime challenges. “This partnership strengthens our collective ability to respond effectively to corruption and economic offences by leveraging our respective expertise, resources, and institutional mandates,” the DG said.
The Director of the SIU Adv Andy Mothibi echoed these sentiments, noting that corruption and economic crimes often transcend institutional and jurisdictional boundaries. “This MOU reinforces our commitment to collaborative action. By working closely with the DCEO, we enhance our capacity to safeguard public resources, promote good governance, and uphold the rule of law,” the SIU Director stated.
The agreement also provides for regular engagement between the two institutions through joint working groups, coordinated training programmes, and strategic consultations to ensure effective implementation of the MOU’s objectives.
The signing of the MOU at the Pretoria headquarters symbolizes a renewed and strengthened partnership dedicated to combating corruption and economic crime. Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to transparency, accountability, and cooperation, and expressed confidence that the agreement will contribute meaningfully to improved investigative outcomes and public trust.
The MOU takes effect immediately and will be reviewed periodically to ensure its continued relevance and effectiveness in addressing emerging corruption and economic crime risks.
